Derby Guide:
Located in the East Midlands, Derby is a city with much historical importance and played a significant part in the industrial revolution. England’s first factory was set up here in 1702. Today it has transformed into a modern city with a multicultural atmosphere and there are plenty of leisure and shopping facilities.
Things to see and do in Derby
A must-visit location is the Derby Cathedral, which dates back to the 16th century. It has been reformed and the new church was designed by James Gibbs with a tower that is 212 ft in height with 189 steps leading up to its roof. It can be visited on certain days of the year when it is open to visitors and special arrangements can also be made.
For those who love to shop till they drop, there are many markets and shopping centres, the more notable one being the Eagle Centre Market. There is also an indoor market set up in Derby Market Hall, where everything from clothes to fruit, veg and poultry are sold between Monday and Saturday.
An interesting visit can be made to Pickford’s House Museum of Georgian Life and Costume. It is based n the Georgian period, being the early 1800s and a replica of gardens from that time has also been created outside. An entire house has been recreated along with all its furnishings e.g. a servant’s bedroom along with a straw mattress. On other floors are toy displays as well as rooms in which a collection of costumes and textiles is on display.
The Royal Crown combines a multitude of entertainment options, it serves as a museum but factory tours take place here as well. There is also a super factory shop from which gifts and souvenirs can be bought, as well as a restaurant where a range of dishes are served. This location makes for a brilliant day out and must not be missed.
Spectacular is the word that best describes Kedleston Hall, which is owned by the National Trust. However, its construction took place under the orders of Robert Adam, a renowned architect. The building itself is a work of art, but contains some glorious artwork as well, whether it be paintings or sculptures. There is also a good 800 acres of beautiful parkland to be enjoyed here.
